AI Optimization (AIO)

AI Optimization for solicitor websites: what it means

When an AI system reads a solicitor website it is answering blunt questions about the firm. AIO is the practice of making sure those questions get answered correctly.

Why it matters

Machines summarise your firm before clients ever visit.

What kind of business is this? Which legal matters does it handle? Where does it operate? Who is behind it? AIO is about making sure those answers are easy to get right.

What confuses AI systems about law-firm websites

Recurring patterns make solicitor websites harder to interpret than they should be:

  • The everything-page: one "Services" page listing ten practice areas in one paragraph each. Systems cannot tell which areas are core and which are incidental.
  • Ambiguous scope: employment pages that never say whether the firm acts for employees, employers, or both; family pages that never distinguish mediation from litigation.
  • Location vagueness: a Dublin address in the footer, but nothing connecting the firm to the counties and towns it actually serves.
  • Marketing language without facts: "trusted advisors delivering excellence" gives an AI system nothing extractable. "A four-solicitor firm in Cork handling residential conveyancing and probate since 2005" does.
  • Content locked in images or PDFs: brochures and image-based pages are effectively invisible to the systems assembling answers.

The AIO structure that works

The fix is structural rather than clever:

  • A clear entity statement, covering who the firm is, what it does and where, repeated consistently.
  • One dedicated page per practice area, each answering the questions clients actually ask.
  • FAQ content in real, crawlable text, ideally with FAQ structured data.
  • Organisation structured data that matches what the pages visibly say.
  • Internal links connecting related concepts, so systems can follow the firm's logic.
  • Consistent name, address and contact details across the site, maps and directories.

None of this requires a redesign. Most of it is content discipline: deciding what the firm wants to be understood as, and saying it plainly everywhere it counts. The same structure that helps AI systems also helps the human skimming your site at 11pm deciding whether to call you tomorrow.

How AIO relates to SEO and GEO

Modern SEO gets pages crawled, indexed and displayed. AIO makes the firm behind those pages understandable.Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) then makes the content quotable, useful source material for generated answers. Cited.ie reviews all three layers together through the Cited Visibility Score™, because a gap in any one of them weakens the others.

The boundary worth repeating

AIO does not guarantee that AI systems will cite your firm, rank you, or send enquiries. No one controls those systems. It also is not legal advice, and it never involves inventing claims, testimonials or credentials. It is the discipline of being accurately understood, which, in an era where machines summarise you to your future clients, is worth taking seriously.

Methodology and boundary note: this article reflects Cited.ie's evidence-led review approach. It is general information for law firms, not legal advice or a guarantee of AI citations, rankings, enquiries or revenue. Examples are illustrative and subject to each firm's own review.
