Some websites are usable as sources. Most are not.
When an AI-assisted search produces an answer about redundancy advice in Dublin, that answer is assembled from sources. Sourceability is the difference between contributing to it and being left out.
The five qualities of sourceable content
- Direct answers. A sourceable page answers the question in its first screen of text. If a client would ask "how long does conveyancing take?", the page says how long conveyancing typically takes, before the firm's history and philosophy.
- Clear structure. One topic per page. Meaningful headings that reflect real questions. Short sections a system can attribute cleanly. A 3,000-word page covering six practice areas is effectively six unsourceable fragments.
- Verifiable specifics. Named solicitors, real locations, actual processes, concrete scope. Systems assembling answers prefer statements that look checkable over adjectives that do not.
- Consistency. The firm's name, address, phone number and service claims should match across the website, Google profile, directories and social profiles. Contradictions lower confidence, for humans and machines alike.
- Crawlable text. If the important content lives in images, animations, sliders or PDFs, it may as well not exist. Static HTML text is what gets read.
A quick self-test
Pick your busiest practice area and ask:
- Does a dedicated page for it exist?
- Does that page answer the three questions a new client always asks?
- Could a stranger tell, from that page alone, where you operate and how to start?
- Is every claim on it something the firm would happily stand over in print?
Four yeses means you are ahead of most firms. Any no is a visibility gap, and the kind of finding an evidence-led review is designed to surface.
Sourceable does not mean promotional
For solicitors there is a real constraint: professional rules and advertising standards limit what can be claimed. Fortunately, sourceability does not require bold claims, it rewards clarity, not hype. "We handle unfair dismissal claims for employees in Leinster, and a first consultation covers X, Y and Z" is restrained, specific, highly sourceable, and subject to the firm's own review. Overclaiming, by contrast, is a risk in every direction: professionally, legally, and in the trust signals systems weigh.
Where this fits in the bigger picture
Sourceability is the heart ofGenerative Engine Optimisation (GEO), and it sits on top of modern SEO foundations andAI Optimization. In theCited Visibility Score™, it is assessed mainly through the AI Answer Readiness and Practice-Area Depth categories, always with the same caveat: improving sourceability improves your odds and your accuracy in AI-era search; nothing guarantees citations, rankings or enquiries.
